As a Contract Scrum Master and Team Lead for Fujitsu, one of our consultants guided a diverse team, comprising four UK-based developers, two testers, and two developers located in Russia. Their collective efforts were focused on a critical Rail Ticketing Project.
A primary objective was to ensure the delivery of a contracted Minimum Viable Product (MVP) within a demanding six-week timeframe. Under considerable pressure, our consultant effectively directed the team to produce high-quality, unit-tested code on schedule, successfully preventing a substantial contractual penalty.
Operating within a framework of two-week sprints, our consultant was instrumental in facilitating sprint planning, retrospectives, and daily stand-ups. A significant aspect of this role involved actively supporting Fujitsu's transition towards a more agile operational methodology.
As part of a three-person front-end team, one of our consultants played a key role in developing the Greggs Click & Collect App. This involved a significant overhaul of the existing application, with a focus on improving key functions like payment processing and offline barcode scanning, alongside a general refresh of the app's look and feel.
The project also included adapting the app to comply with new regulations concerning product nutrition and allergy information. Our consultant was instrumental in setting up controls that allowed features to be turned on or off remotely, and in integrating Adyen, a leading payment platform, to handle transactions.
The team followed a development approach that prioritised clean and organised code. They worked in short, regular cycles (sprints), holding daily check-ins and review meetings to keep the project on track. All code changes were carefully managed and reviewed, ensuring a smooth development process. A key objective was to achieve an identical and visually perfect design on both Android and Apple devices.
One of our consultants was brought in for a contract at the House of Fraser store in Swindon, specifically to develop a new Payment Gateway system. This involved integrating Barclaycard Merchant Services and their Solve Connect API to the in-store payment terminals.
A significant part of this project was ensuring the new system had high test coverage (80% unit test coverage) to ensure reliability. The most challenging aspect was implementing this modern payment solution into an aged, legacy till system (based on ASP 1.0). Even getting the existing till software to run proved to be a considerable task, taking several weeks. A further complexity was the uncertainty about whether the till system had the identical codebase to those currently operating in other House of Fraser stores.
This project was a testament to overcoming technical hurdles and integrating new technology with established, older system.
One of our consultants was the sole developer working on Babbu, a parenting app designed to support parents of children from birth to four years old. When they started, the app was encountering significant issues, failing to handle user sign-ins or process subscriptions.
Our consultant undertook a comprehensive rebuild of the app's core functionalities. They completely re-engineered the user authentication system and streamlined how the app managed its data, leading to a much smoother user experience and faster startup times. They also successfully resolved all problems with in-app subscriptions and addressed numerous issues within the app's extensive supporting online systems.
By applying a meticulous approach to code organisation and quality, they delivered a fully functional app and backend system, ready for launch on app stores.
Working for a client in Nottinghamshire with a substantial turnover of £245 million, one of our consultants initially explored options for hosting an older app (built over five years ago) within a modern framework.
It quickly became clear that the most effective solution was a complete, yet controlled, migration of the app to Xamarin Forms. Our consultant championed a methodical approach, focusing on behaviour-driven and test-driven development, ensuring quality and stability throughout the transition.
To illustrate the benefits, they developed an example application. This demonstrated how Xamarin Forms allows for significant code sharing across different platforms (Android and iOS) while still enabling access to specific native features. The example also showcased best practices in app architecture, data management, and integration with device functionalities, alongside comprehensive unit testing.
Crucially, by adopting this structured approach and demonstrating modern design patterns, our consultant was able to help Microlise reduce their initial estimation for the app conversion from two years down to a more efficient six to nine months. This highlights the significant time and cost savings achieved through strategic technical guidance.
One of our consultants played a pivotal role in a ground-breaking project for easyJet: the development of their very first self-service kiosks for airport check-in and baggage handling.
This was a pioneering initiative, creating an entirely new customer experience at the airport. Our consultant was integral to bringing these innovative kiosks to life, helping to design and implement the system that allowed passengers to check in and manage their luggage independently. This project laid the foundation for the streamlined airport processes that many travellers now take for granted.
One of our consultants was tasked with developing a crucial debt collection system for EDF Energy, specifically designed to manage accounts of late-paying customers.
This project involved creating a robust and efficient system to help EDF Energy streamline their process for recovering outstanding payments. Our consultant's work provided EDF Energy with enhanced capabilities to manage these accounts effectively, ultimately contributing to improved financial operations and customer engagement for those needing support with their payments.
